The Vibrant Portraits of Alvaro Tapias
Imbued with intensity, Chilean artist Alvaro Tapia brings vibrant, contrasting colors and geometric shapes to his illustrations. Despite his chaotic aesthetic, Tapia admits that the process behind his portraits is meticulous, slow and deliberate. First reducing the image to its contours, he finds method in his madness by using bold techniques that add to the original portrait until the image itself bursts with life.

Severed Taso soldier animatronic head from Day of the Dead
(Dead Films, 1985) Incredibly realistic severed Taso soldier head from the seminal horror film, George Romero’s Day of the Dead. Constructed of a fiberglass underskull, foam latex skin accurately hand-painted in skin tones, hand-punched hair, resin teeth and tongue. In this nightmarish scene, a zombie tears the soldier’s head off and the attached puppeteering cables actuated movement of the jaw while the blood lines allowed spurting of the studio blood. The craftsmanship is incredible. Includes a LOA from the head’s creator, Tom Savini.
Well. Haven’t drawn him in a while.

It’s not like my old self - I’m not in character anymore, I’m me. I’m not hiding behind that anymore.
